Let’s bring you up to date March 4, 2009

Posted by goirishgorebels in Training Update.

Ok, so for those who don’t know already, I will be riding in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes.  I made a commitment this year to ride the 100 mile course.  I know, many have asked…”Are you really going to do this?” and “How many miles are you going to ride?”  Well, I’m going to do it and I am very excited about the challenge.

My goal at the beginning of the year was to go on a low carb diet for the first two months of the year, then start riding.  I wanted to drop 20 pounds by the end of February.  Well, I didn’t quite get there.  I have so far lost 16 pounds and have not yet begun riding.

The first week of March brought us about 6 inches of snow and it’s just too cold for me to ride.  I don’t have all the cool looking rider gear needed to ride in this weather.  So, as happens many times when you make a plan, things change.   It looks like the weather is going to break some this week, so I will go for a couple small rides this week.  With daylight savings coming soon, that should give me a better chance to ride more during the week.  I just hope the weather will cooperate.

Prior to January, I had been riding some.  I started in October with a five mile ride.  I got about four miles into it and had to walk the bike up a hill.  I didn’t let that get me down.  The next day, I did it again and completed the five miles.  I kept riding everyday for a week, and ended up riding about seven miles after that first week.  Without going into every detail, I built up to a 27 mile ride in November.  I’ve only riden twice since.  Two 10 mile rides in January when the weather was kind.

That brings up to today.  It’s time to hit the road and begin the training.  The plan is to increase the rides by five miles every week.  That should put me about 80 miles going into the race.  If I can stay on this plan, I should be fine.

Check back and see how I’m doing.  Lastly, if you know of anyone who would like to donate, please send them a link to this site or to the donation link on this site.
